With the start of a new year and a new decade, the economic outlook for the City of London still seems uncertain with lots of headwinds expected in the medium term. However, the clear results of the elections with a large Parliamentary majority should provide some stability, at least in terms of the governments ability to implement policy decisions. The UK economy will survive: it is diversified, flexible and more robust than many think. The City will evolve, as it has done after many earlier economic upheavals over the decades. We still have the core strengths including regulatory regime, skilled man power, and an environment conducive to constant innovation e.g. Fintechs. For the City to thrive, however, will require intelligent leadership across all major firms and sectors to adopt new business models. Most importantly, we will need the new government to appreciate the importance of financial services for the future of UK economy post Brexit. Happy New Year to you all!.
